The Three Doshas of Ayurveda

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, identifies three fundamental energies or doshas that govern our physical and mental processes: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each person has a unique combination of these doshas, which determines their prakriti (constitution).

Vata Dosha

The energy of movement (Air & Space)

Physical Characteristics

  • Light, thin build
  • Dry skin and hair
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Irregular appetite
  • Light, interrupted sleep
  • Energetic, quick movements

Mental Characteristics

  • Quick thinking
  • Creative and imaginative
  • Enthusiastic when balanced
  • Anxious when imbalanced
  • Easily adaptable
  • Tendency to worry

Balance & Imbalance

  • Imbalanced by: Cold, dry weather, irregular routines, excessive travel
  • Balanced by: Warmth, routine, grounding practices
  • When imbalanced: Anxiety, insomnia, constipation, dry skin
  • Calming foods: Warm, moist, slightly oily, sweet, sour and salty tastes

Pitta Dosha

The energy of transformation (Fire & Water)

Physical Characteristics

  • Medium build with good muscle development
  • Warm skin, often reddish in tone
  • Strong digestion and appetite
  • Moderate sleep patterns
  • Natural leadership qualities
  • Strong metabolism

Mental Characteristics

  • Sharp intellect
  • Good concentration
  • Precise and articulate
  • Ambitious and driven
  • Passionate and intensity
  • Tendency toward perfectionism

Balance & Imbalance

  • Imbalanced by: Hot weather, spicy foods, intense competition
  • Balanced by: Cooling activities, moderation, relaxation
  • When imbalanced: Irritability, inflammation, rashes, heartburn
  • Calming foods: Cool, refreshing foods, bitter, sweet and astringent tastes

Kapha Dosha

The energy of structure (Earth & Water)

Physical Characteristics

  • Solid, sturdy build
  • Thick, smooth, oily skin
  • Steady energy and stamina
  • Strong immunity
  • Deep, heavy sleep
  • Slow, graceful movements

Mental Characteristics

  • Calm and grounded
  • Excellent memory
  • Compassionate and loving
  • Patient and methodical
  • Loyal and supportive
  • Resistance to change

Balance & Imbalance

  • Imbalanced by: Cold, damp weather, excessive sleep, heavy foods
  • Balanced by: Physical activity, variety, stimulation
  • When imbalanced: Lethargy, weight gain, congestion, depression
  • Balancing foods: Light, dry, warm foods, pungent, bitter and astringent tastes

Finding Your Balance

According to Ayurveda, each person has a unique constitution (prakriti) composed of all three doshas, with usually one or two being predominant. Health is achieved by maintaining the unique balance of these doshas as determined by your natural constitution.
